About the generation

What makes the BMW 1 Series F20 special

BMW F20 tuning: the March 2015 facelift is the dividing line

The BMW 1 Series F20 is the five-door hatchback built from June 2011 to June 2019, and the three-door version is the F21. The F70, the 1 Series from 2024, is a different generation from this one. The engines changed with the facelift of March 2015, so a tuning box for the F20 is chosen by build date. Before the facelift the petrol cars used the N13, the N20 and, in the M135i, the N55, and the diesels the N47.

From 2015 the petrol range moved step by step to the B38 and B48, and the diesels to the B47 and B37; the last N13, N20 and N55 cars left in 2016. The 120d went from 184 hp and 380 Nm to 190 hp and 400 Nm, and the 118d went from 143 hp to 150 hp. The 125d rose from 218 hp to 224 hp at 450 Nm, and the later car came only with the eight-speed automatic. The M135i made 320 hp and then 326 hp, and the M140i followed in July 2016 with the B58 and 340 hp.

The GAN GT takes the 120d with 190 hp and 400 Nm to 225 hp and 505 Nm. These are the stated gains for this engine type, not a dyno reading of your car.

BMW 1 Series F20 chip tuning: questions

BMW F20 chiptuning on a 118d or 120d: does the N47 timing chain matter?

The N47 chain sits at the back of the engine, and a rattle is the warning sign. A check from about 100 thousand km is recommended, and chain failures are known on BMW diesels up to 2015. The B47 that replaced it in March 2015 is a different engine.

BMW 118d: stage 1, tuning box or ECU remap?

Stage 1 usually means a software change; an ECU remap replaces the factory software in the engine control unit. A tuning box does not replace that software. Your manufacturer's warranty is preserved: the ECU software is never changed, and the module can be removed at any time.

BMW 116i F20 with 109 hp: is it the older 136 hp engine?

No, the 116i with 136 hp and the 1.6-litre N13 was built until January 2015. After the facelift the 116i has the 1.5-litre three-cylinder B38 with 109 hp and 180 Nm, and that is the engine in the catalogue.

Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 tune?

Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU remap without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
