What should I check on an OM 651 diesel before Mercedes chiptuning?
On the C 220 CDI, C 250 CDI, E 220 CDI and E 250 CDI, check the Delphi piezo injectors. Those of 2009 to 2011 could fail at around 50 thousand km and drop the engine into limp mode. The 2014 chain tensioner recall is a separate matter. A tuning box neither repairs nor replaces mechanical parts such as injectors or a timing chain, so have a workshop look at both first.
How does the M271 Kompressor differ from the M271 CGI?
The M271 Kompressor has a mechanical supercharger and was built from 2002 to 2011. The M271 EVO with CGI has a turbocharger and direct injection and was introduced in 2009. In the catalogue the Kompressor engines are matched with the GAN GA+ and the CGI engines with the GAN GT, so choose by engine and year. The C 200 Kompressor goes from 184 hp and 250 Nm to 206 hp and 280 Nm; the C 200 CGI from 184 hp and 270 Nm to 236 hp and 349 Nm.
Why is a Mercedes C 250 CGI a 1.8 and a C 300 a 2.0?
Because the number has marked a power class since the W203 and W204: the W204 C 250 CGI has a 1.8-litre engine and the W205 C 300 a 2.0-litre one. The C 250 CDI diesel has a different capacity again. So in the catalogue you choose by engine code and year, not by the number alone.
Tuning box or ECU remap for a Mercedes: what stays untouched?
An ECU remap replaces the factory software in the engine control unit, which is a different method from a tuning box. The GAN module sits between the engine sensors and the ECU and adjusts their signals, so the factory software, checksums and flash counter stay untouched. Mercedes tuning starts with one diesel
For Mercedes tuning with a tuning box, start with the OM 651 diesel in the C 220 CDI, C 250 CDI, E 220 CDI and E 250 CDI. Its Delphi piezo injectors are a known weak point: between 2009 and 2011 they failed at around 50 thousand km and sent the engine into limp mode. The timing chain and its tensioner are the second point to check; a 2014 recall covered cars built between February and November that year.
The M271 petrol engine sits in the C 180 and C 200 Kompressor, the E 200 K and the C 200 CGI. In 2010 the W204 C-Class was the most registered car in its class in Germany.
Reading Mercedes engine names
Since the W203 and W204, the number on the boot lid marks a power class, not the engine size. The W204 C 250 CGI is a 1.8-litre petrol, while the C 250 CDI diesel has a different capacity; the W205 C 300 is a 2.0-litre and the C 400 a 3.0-litre. Kompressor means a mechanical supercharger, CGI means petrol direct injection, BlueEFFICIENCY is an economy package for the W204, and 4MATIC means all-wheel drive. The M271 Kompressor was built from 2002 to 2011; the M271 EVO with CGI, turbocharged and direct-injected, followed from 2009.
The 1.6 and 2.0-litre M270 and M274 turbo petrol engines came to the A, C and E in 2012 and 2013, and to the SLK in 2015. On the diesel side the OM 611/646 family gave way to the OM 651 in 2008, and the V6 OM 642 arrived in 2005. CDI became BlueTEC for diesels with SCR and AdBlue, and then simply d: a C 220 CDI turns into a C 220 BlueTEC and later a C 220 d. Since 2014 a lowercase letter after the number marks the drive: d is diesel, e a plug-in hybrid and h a hybrid, as in the C 350 e and C 300 h.

GAN GT or GAN GA+ on a Mercedes
Every engine in the catalogue is matched with a module: diesels and turbo engines mostly with the GAN GT, rated at up to 30% more power, naturally aspirated petrol engines with the GAN GA+, rated at up to 12%. Mercedes engine tuning therefore starts with the engine code: the W204 C 200 CGI, C 250 CGI and C 350 CDI all work with the GAN GT. The C 250 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY goes from 204 hp and 310 Nm to 261 hp and 397 Nm with the GAN GT. These are the stated gains for this engine type, not a dyno reading of your car.
The supercharged Kompressor engines, such as the C 200 Kompressor, get the GAN GA+. So do the V6 and V8 petrol engines, such as the C 350 and the C 63 AMG. For hybrids such as the C 300 h and C 350 e, check the catalogue by engine before you assume a figure.
Model names and body codes
Some models changed their names: the SLK became the SLC in 2016, the ML became the GLE in autumn 2015, and the A-Class W169 gave way to the W176 in September 2012. The CLK W209 coupé was replaced by the E-Class Coupé C207 in May 2009, and the C-Class W205 by the W206 in 2021. The body codes are W202 to W205 for the C-Class, W210 to W213 for the E-Class, R170 to R172 for the SLK, W163, W164 and W166 for the M-Class, and W168, W169, W176 and W177 for the A-Class.
