How do the Tucson III 1.6 GDI and 1.6 T-GDI differ with a tuning box?
For the naturally aspirated 1.6 GDI with 132 hp there is the GAN GA+, which adds 16 hp and 19 Nm. The 1.6 T-GDI with 177 hp is turbocharged, so it needs the GAN GT instead.
Which Hyundai diesels work with the GAN GT?
The Santa Fe II with the 2.2 CRDi of 197 hp is rated at 422 Nm, and with the GAN GT it reaches 252 hp and 530 Nm. The 1.6 CRDi of the Tucson III with 136 hp gains 39 hp and 93 Nm. These are the stated gains for this engine type, not a dyno reading of your car.
What does a tuning box add to the i30 N?
The 2.0 T-GDI with 250 hp gains 41 hp and 100 Nm, and the N Performance with 275 hp gains 47 hp and 100 Nm.
Tuning box or ECU remap for a Hyundai?
An ECU remap, the method most often meant by Hyundai chiptuning, rewrites the factory software in the engine control unit (ECU). The GAN module works differently: it sits between the engine sensors and the ECU, so the factory software, checksums and flash counter stay untouched. Your manufacturer's warranty is preserved: the ECU software is never changed, and the module can be removed at any time.

An ECU remap permanently changes the maps in the ECU and leaves a trace in the flash counter. The GAN tuning module adjusts the sensor signals instead: the ECU stays in factory condition, and you can return the car to stock in about a minute.

Hyundai tuning: one letter changes the module
In Hyundai tuning a single letter in the engine name can decide which tuning box you need. The Tucson III has a 1.6 GDI with 132 hp and 161 Nm and a 1.6 T-GDI with 177 hp and 265 Nm. MPI stands for a naturally aspirated petrol engine with multi-point injection, GDI for one with direct injection and still no turbo, and T-GDI for a turbocharged one. CRDi is a Common Rail turbodiesel.
The Tucson III diesels are the 1.7 CRDi with 116 and 141 hp, the 2.0 CRDi with 136 and 185 hp and, from 2018, the 1.6 CRDi with 116 and 136 hp. For Hyundai Tucson tuning the naturally aspirated 1.6 GDI therefore takes the GAN GA+ and gains 16 hp and 19 Nm, while the turbocharged 1.6 T-GDI needs the GAN GT. In Europe the Tucson of 2010 to 2015 was sold as the Hyundai ix35, so look for it under that name.
Hyundai diesels and the CRDi range
The CRDi diesels work with the GAN GT, and on the Santa Fe 2.2 CRDi the catalogue gain is 55 hp. The Santa Fe II had the 2.2 CRDi with 150 hp until 2008 and with 197 hp from November 2009. The Santa Fe III added the 2.0 CRDi with 150 hp, and from November 2015 the 2.2 CRDi had 200 hp.
The i30 and the Tucson use smaller diesels, from the 1.4 and 1.6 CRDi to the 2.0 CRDi. The Santa Fe IV has the 2.2 CRDi with 200 hp from 2018, and a 2.0 CRDi with 150 hp as the front-wheel-drive alternative. For Hyundai engine tuning on a diesel the build date matters, because the same displacement came with several outputs.

Smartstream, mild hybrids and the N models
Since 2018 Hyundai has named new engines Smartstream, where the letter shows the fuel and the number the displacement. The 48V mild hybrids sit on turbocharged engines, such as the 1.5 T-GDI with 160 hp of the i30 and the 1.6 CRDi with 136 hp. The i30 N has the 2.0 T-GDI with 250 hp, the N Performance version has 275 hp, and the facelifted N Performance has 280 hp from 2021. The GAN GT covers the 250 hp and the 275 hp versions.
The i30 Fastback is a five-door liftback of the i30, not a separate model, and blue marks the economical versions. The Kona has a 1.0 T-GDI with 120 hp and a 1.6 T-GDI with 177 hp, and the Kona N reaches 280 hp. In the catalogue every engine has its module: the T-GDI and CRDi turbo engines get the GAN GT, rated at up to 30% more power, and the naturally aspirated MPI and GDI engines the GAN GA+, rated at up to 12%.
