Questions

Volkswagen chip tuning: questions

TSI Twincharger 1.4 or a plain 1.4 TSI: which figures apply?

The Twincharger has both a turbocharger and a supercharger and makes 140 to 170 hp, so you go by the power figure. Plain 1.4 TSI engines from 2008 are turbo engines with direct injection. With the GAN GT, the Golf V 1.4 TSI Twincharger with 140 hp and 220 Nm goes to 181 hp and 286 Nm, and the Golf VI plain 1.4 TSI with 122 hp and 200 Nm to 146 hp and 260 Nm. These are the stated gains for these engine types, not a dyno reading of your car.

Does the module still apply to a 2.0 TDI EA189 after the 2015 software update?

The update covered the EA189 diesels built from 2008 to 2015. The GAN module does not change the ECU software, so it leaves the update on your car as it is. With the GAN GT, a Passat B7 2.0 TDI with 140 hp and 320 Nm goes to 178 hp and 404 Nm.

Does VW chiptuning change the oil use of the 1.8 and 2.0 TSI?

The higher oil consumption of the first two EA888 generations comes from the oil control piston rings, and no official recall for it was found in Europe. The GAN module makes no promises about engine life.

Tuning box or ECU remap for a Volkswagen TSI or TDI?

The GAN module works on the signals of the engine sensors, whereas an ECU remap replaces the software in the control unit. With the module the factory software, checksums and flash counter stay untouched.

Does a tuning box keep the Volkswagen warranty?

Your manufacturer's warranty is preserved: the ECU software is never changed, and the module can be removed at any time.

Does the GAN module affect my Volkswagen warranty?

No. The module does not change the ECU software and can be removed at any time, so your manufacturer’s warranty is preserved. We also give an engine warranty: 2 years with the GAN GT, 1 year with the GAN GTL.

Tuning box or ECU remap: which should I choose?

An ECU remap permanently changes the maps in the ECU and leaves a trace in the flash counter. The GAN tuning module adjusts the sensor signals instead: the ECU stays in factory condition, and you can return the car to stock in about a minute.

About Volkswagen engines

Volkswagen chip tuning: what to know about the engines

VW chip tuning: what TSI really means

Read the engine name before any VW chip tuning with a tuning box, because TSI has not always meant the same thing. In 2005 TSI stood for Twincharged Stratified Injection, a 1.4 with a turbocharger and a supercharger and 140 to 170 hp. From 2008 the name also covers ordinary turbo engines with direct injection. They come in families: the EA111 until about 2012, the modular EA211 from 2012 with the 1.0, 1.2, 1.4 and 1.5 TSI, and the EA888 with the 1.8 and 2.0 TSI and TFSI.

The first two generations of the EA888, built from 2008 to 2011, are known for higher oil consumption caused by the oil control piston rings. This concerns early EA888 engines such as the 2.0 TSI of the Golf VI GTI and the Passat B7. Audi and VW changed the oil control rings on these engines several times.

TDI: pump injector or common rail

TDI engines used pump injectors (PD, EA188) until about 2010, while the common rail EA189 ran from 2008 to 2015 and the EA288 followed. In October 2015 the Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt ordered a recall of 2.4 million EA189 cars in Germany, and the fix was a software update. Among others, it covers the 2.0 TDI and the 1.6 TDI of the EA189 family, built from 2008 to 2015.

For the 1.6 TDI the update also included a flow straightener in front of the air mass meter. TSI and TDI are turbo engines and mostly work with the GAN GT, rated at up to 30% more power; the MPI and FSI petrol engines get the GAN GA+, rated at up to 12%.

How a VW engine name is built

A VW engine name gives the displacement, the technology and the power: 1.4 TSI or 2.0 TDI, with the hp figure after it. Suffixes mark the version: BlueMotion, BMT for BlueMotion Technology, ACT for cylinder deactivation, and GTI, GTD and R for the sporty ones. The R32 of the Golf V and the R36 of the Passat B6 belong to the same group of fast versions.

The GTI exists as a Golf and as a Polo. The main European models include the Golf, the Passat, the Polo, the Tiguan, the T-Roc and the Transporter. Chiptuning and chip tuning are two spellings of the same word.

Which Volkswagen models are in the catalogue

The catalogue lists 39 models from Volkswagen. The most engines are listed for the Golf (103), Passat (78) and Polo (77). The biggest gain among the models is on the Golf: up to +74 hp.

Naturally aspirated Volkswagen engines

For 153 naturally aspirated engines from Volkswagen, there is the GAN GA+: up to 12% more power and up to 15% lower fuel consumption in ECO mode. You can fit it yourself, in most cases in under 15 minutes.
