BMW i8 tuning: the petrol half of a plug-in hybrid
Can you tune a BMW i8? With a tuning box the answer concerns the petrol half, the 1.5-litre turbocharged three-cylinder B38 with 231 hp and 320 Nm. An electric motor drives the front axle, and the whole system makes 362 hp, or 374 hp from May 2018. The catalogue covers one engine, the 1.5h with 231 hp, and with the GAN GA it reaches 259 hp and 358 Nm.
These are the stated gains for this engine type, not a dyno reading of your car. The Coupé I12 was built from 2014 to June 2020 and the Roadster I15 from 2018.

BMW i8 tuning: which part of the 374 hp does the module work with?
The catalogue figures cover the petrol engine with 231 hp; the 374 hp is the system figure with the electric motor included. For this engine the GAN GA is rated at up to 12% more power, and that rating refers to the petrol engine, not to the system output.
BMW i8 chiptuning: tuning box or ECU remap?
A tuning box leaves the factory software as it is; an ECU remap replaces it. Your manufacturer's warranty is preserved: the ECU software is never changed, and the module can be removed at any time.
Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 tune?
Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU remap without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
