What makes the Ford Explorer V special
Ford Explorer 2010 tuning: an import with American engines
An Explorer U502 on a European road came in as an import. Ford sold the Explorer in Europe from 1993 to 2001, and from 2019 only as a plug-in hybrid. The fifth generation was built in Chicago from December 2010 to March 2019; you will also see it listed under its first model year, 2011. Ford Explorer tuning with a tuning box therefore works from the American engine range.
Engines and modules
Explorer Sport tuning starts from the 3.5 EcoBoost, a twin-turbo V6 with 370 hp that works with the GAN GT. The Sport trim with this engine ran from 2013 to the end of production. The four-cylinder 2.3 EcoBoost of 2016 to 2019 works with the GAN GT as well.
The naturally aspirated 3.5 Ti-VCT V6 with 294 hp uses the GAN GA+. Explorer U502 tuning covers the Sport and Platinum trims alike, but the engine, not the trim, decides the module.

Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 tune?
Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU remap without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
