What makes the Honda CR-V III special

Honda CR-V III tuning: the year decides the diesel

Honda CR-V III tuning with a tuning box comes down to the production year: the CR-V III (RE, also called Mk3) changed its diesel in October 2009. A CR-V of 2007 or 2008 has the first diesel: the 2.2 i-CTDi with 140 hp and 340 Nm, built until September 2009. From October 2009 the 2.2 i-DTEC with 150 hp and 350 Nm replaced it.

The catalogue lists the two diesels separately, both with the GAN GT: the i-CTDi gains 41 hp and 93 Nm, and the i-DTEC gains 43 hp and 95 Nm. The gains differ by only 2 hp, so what matters is choosing the engine that matches your build date.

The petrol engines of the CR-V III

The naturally aspirated 2.0 i-VTEC (R20A2) with 150 hp and 192 Nm stayed in production from 2006 to 2012, with a six-speed manual or a five-speed automatic. The 2.4 i-VTEC with 166 hp and 220 Nm was naturally aspirated as well and came with the five-speed automatic. Both petrol engines work with the GAN GA+. All versions of the CR-V III come with Real Time 4WD all-wheel drive.

How much more power does a CR-V III 2.2 i-DTEC 150 get with a tuning box?

With the GAN GT the engine goes from 150 hp and 350 Nm to 193 hp and 445 Nm. A turbodiesel like this is the type of engine where the GAN GT gives up to 30% more power. These are the stated gains for this engine type, not a dyno reading of your car.

What does a tuning box add to the petrol CR-V III?

The 2.0 i-VTEC with 150 hp and 192 Nm gains 18 hp and 23 Nm, and the 2.4 i-VTEC with 166 hp and 220 Nm gains 20 hp and 26 Nm. The GAN GA+ gives up to 12% more power, and a naturally aspirated engine does not go beyond that.

What does a tuning box not change on the 2.2 diesel of the CR-V III?

On the 2.2 i-CTDi and i-DTEC, the diesel particulate filter (DPF) clogs when the car mostly does short trips, and the flexible EGR bypass hose can crack. For CR-V III engine tuning that means one thing: the box adds power, but it neither cleans the filter nor replaces the hose.

Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 tune?

Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU remap without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
