About the generation

What makes the Jaguar X-Type special

Jaguar X-Type tuning: a Ford under the Jaguar badge

You might expect a Jaguar to have engines of its own, yet the X-Type is built on the Ford Mondeo platform. The diesels confirm it: they are Ford Duratorq engines, as used in the Mondeo and the Transit. The engine in your car decides which tuning box fits, and there is one for each of them.

The X-Type was built from April 2001 to December 2009 as a saloon and, from January 2004, as an estate. Around 350,000 were built in all, and a facelift in November 2007 reworked the front, the rear and the lamps. At first every car had all-wheel drive; from mid-2002 front-wheel-drive base versions followed, the 2.0 V6 and the 2.0 D.

Diesel and petrol engines

The 2.0 D, listed as the 2.0 TD with 131 hp and 330 Nm, was sold from July 2003 to July 2005. The 2.2 D made 155 hp from July 2005 to December 2006; the facelifted version with a particulate filter followed in 2007 with 145 hp. That 145 hp car was the first X-Type diesel with an automatic gearbox. The 145 hp version has a particulate filter; the 155 hp version does not.

The petrol V6 engines are the 2.0 with 156 hp, the 2.5 with 196 hp and the 3.0 with 231 hp. The 2.0 V6 in fact displaces 2.1 litres, which is why the catalogue calls it the 2.1i. The 2.5 and the 3.0 came with all-wheel drive only.

How much more power does the X-Type 2.2 D get?

With the GAN GT the 2.2 D goes from 155 hp and 360 Nm to 200 hp and 457 Nm. The diesels use the GAN GT, which is rated at up to 30% more power. These are the stated gains for this engine type, not a dyno reading of your car.

X-Type 2.2 D 155 hp or 145 hp with a particulate filter: which one is mine?

The year or the filter tells you: the 155 hp car without a filter was built from 2005 to 2006, the 145 hp car with a filter from 2007 to 2009. Both work with the GAN GT.

Can the X-Type 2.5 V6 and 3.0 V6 be tuned?

Yes, the 2.5 is listed at 196 hp and 241 Nm and the 3.0 at 231 hp and 279 Nm, both for the GAN GA+. The GAN GA+ rating for such V6 engines is up to 12% more power.

Does Jaguar chiptuning cover the X-Type Estate?

The same figures apply to the Estate wherever the engine matches, so go by the engine, not the body.

Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 tune?

Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU remap without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
