What makes the Mercedes-Benz C W204 special

W204 tuning starts with the injectors and the chain

On the OM 651 diesel in the C 220 CDI and C 250 CDI, the Delphi piezo injectors and the chain tensioner are the two known weak points. On 2008 to 2011 engines the injectors failed at around 50 thousand km and sent the car into limp mode. A 2014 recall of the OM 651 chain tensioner covered cars built from February to November 2014. A tuning box cannot fix or replace mechanical parts, injectors and chain included, so have a workshop check both before you fit one.

Which GAN line fits which W204

The C 180 CGI, C 200 CGI and C 250 CGI work with the GAN GT. So do the CDI diesels from the C 200 CDI to the C 350 CDI. The V6 engines of the C 280, C 300 and C 350, and the C 200 Kompressor with 184 hp, use the GAN GA+.

If you want to tune a W204, go by engine code and build year, not by the badge. The W204 saloon, the S204 estate and the C204 coupé share one catalogue generation, so W204 tuning uses the same engine figures for all three.

C 220 CDI and C 250 CDI (OM 651): what to check before W204 chiptuning?

The 220 CDI got solenoid injectors from mid-2010 or spring 2011. The 250 CDI kept piezo injectors, which a service action replaced with solenoid ones and a new control unit. The C 220 CDI with 170 hp, whether OM 646 or OM 651, and the C 250 CDI with 204 hp and 500 Nm are covered by the GAN GT.

C 200 CGI, C 250 CGI and C 180 (M271): what does the module change?

The C 250 CGI, an M271 EVO petrol turbo, is listed at 204 hp and 310 Nm and with the GAN GT at 261 hp and 397 Nm. These are the stated gains for this engine type, not a dyno reading of your car. The module sits between the engine sensors and the ECU and adjusts their signals, and the engine's factory protections remain active.

Which module fits a W204 C 180?

The petrol C 180 has 156 hp in every version. It is the 1.8 Kompressor until October 2008, the 1.6 BlueEFFICIENCY from April 2008 to April 2010, the 1.8 CGI from November 2009 to April 2012 and the 1.6 turbo M274 afterwards. The CGI and M274 versions work with the GAN GT, so the build date decides.

Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 tune?

Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU remap without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
