What makes the Mitsubishi Space Star special

Mitsubishi Space Star tuning: two cars under one name

The name Space Star covers two different cars. The first Space Star was a compact MPV on the Carisma platform, built from 1998 to 2005 by NedCar in the Netherlands. The second is a five-door hatchback built in Thailand and sold from 2013 to 2025. Your engine decides which of the two cars you own, and the tuning box follows the engine.

A Space Star 1.2 is the hatchback, which has naturally aspirated three-cylinder petrol engines only. It came as a 1.0 with 71 hp and 88 Nm, as a 1.2 with 80 hp and 106 Nm and, from September 2020, as a 1.2 with 71 hp and 102 Nm. In the catalogue all three work with the GAN GA+.

The compact MPV: petrol and diesel engines

The MPV had a 1.3 with 82 hp and 120 Nm, a 1.6 with 98 hp and 150 Nm and a 1.8 with 112 hp and 157 Nm. The 1.3 with 86 hp and 117 Nm, sold from 1998 to 2000 and again from 2004, is not in the catalogue. The 1.8 MPI replaced the 1.8 GDI with 122 hp and 174 Nm in autumn 2002. The diesel, a 1.9 DI-D common-rail unit developed with Renault, arrived with 102 hp and 215 Nm in 2001.

A 116 hp version with 265 Nm followed in October 2002. Both diesels use the GAN GT, and the petrol engines of the MPV the GAN GA+. The Space Wagon and the Space Runner are separate models, not versions of the Space Star.

Space Star 1.2 chip tuning: which version is mine?

Choose by power: the 80 hp version with 106 Nm ran from 2013 to November 2020, the 71 hp version with 102 Nm from September 2020. Both use the GAN GA+.

How much more power does the Space Star 1.9 DI-D get?

In the catalogue the 1.9 DI-D with 116 hp and 265 Nm goes to 151 hp and 343 Nm with the GAN GT. The GAN GT is rated at up to 30% more power, the GAN GA+ at up to 12%. These are the stated gains for this engine type, not a dyno reading of your car. Injectors are a known weak point of this Renault engine.

Can I tune the Space Star 1.8 GDI with 122 hp?

Yes, the catalogue covers it with the GAN GA+. The GDI injects fuel directly, and carbon build-up in the throttle body and the catalytic converter can occur on this engine.

I own a Mirage. Does this page apply to my car?

The European Space Star is the Mirage hatchback under another name, so check that your engine is the 1.0 with 71 hp or the 1.2 with 71 or 80 hp before you choose.

Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 tune?

Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU remap without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
