Smart Chip Tuning
Up to 30% more power for your Smart
The Smart catalogue lists 27 engines (models: 3, generations: 5). For 26% of the engines, there are the GAN GT (up to 30% more power) and GAN GTL (up to 25%) tuning modules; for the rest, the GAN GA and GAN GA+ (up to 12%). Each engine’s figures are on its own page.
Smart chip tuning without an ECU remap
The tuning module sits between the sensors and the engine control unit (ECU) and adjusts their signals. Your manufacturer’s warranty is preserved: the ECU software is never changed, and the module can be removed at any time.

Smart chip tuning: questions
How much more power does a tuning box give the smart fortwo 453 with the 0.9 turbo?
With the GAN GT the 0.9 turbo goes from 90 hp and 135 Nm to 112 hp and 172 Nm in the catalogue. The 109 hp Brabus, which needs Super Plus fuel, is not in the catalogue. The GAN GT is rated at up to 30% more power on turbo petrol engines; these are the stated gains for this engine type, not a dyno reading of your car.
Which versions of the smart fortwo cdi and the forfour 1.5 cdi are covered?
The fortwo 0.8 cdi made 41 hp at first, 45 hp from 2007 and 54 hp from July 2009, and the forfour 1.5 cdi 68 and 95 hp. The catalogue covers each of these outputs with the GAN GT.
Which module fits the 0.7 turbo of the fortwo 450 and the Roadster?
Both use the Mercedes M160, and the factory Brabus 0.7 with 75 hp shares the engine family with the 50 and 61 hp versions. In the catalogue these engines work with the GAN GA+, rated at up to 12% more power.
Chiptuning smart: tuning box or ECU remap?
Smart car computer tuning can mean a tuning box or an ECU remap: the remap rewrites the factory software, the box sits between the engine sensors and the ECU and adjusts their signals. With the GAN module the factory software, checksums and flash counter stay untouched, and the engine's factory protections remain active. Your manufacturer's warranty is preserved: the ECU software is never changed, and the module can be removed at any time.
Does the GAN module affect my Smart warranty?
No. The module does not change the ECU software and can be removed at any time, so your manufacturer’s warranty is preserved. We also give an engine warranty: 2 years with the GAN GT, 1 year with the GAN GTL.
Tuning box or ECU remap: which should I choose?
An ECU remap permanently changes the maps in the ECU and leaves a trace in the flash counter. The GAN tuning module adjusts the sensor signals instead: the ECU stays in factory condition, and you can return the car to stock in about a minute.
Smart chip tuning: what to know about the engines
smart tuning: which smart do you drive?
Before anything else, settle which smart you drive: a fortwo, a forfour or a Roadster, and from which generation. In smart fortwo tuning with a tuning box the engine family decides the module, and that family changes with each generation. The fortwo C450 of 1998 to 2007 and the Roadster of 2002 to 2005 use the Mercedes M160, a 0.6 or 0.7-litre three-cylinder turbo petrol engine. The fortwo C451, built from March 2007 to November 2014, switched to a Mitsubishi 1.0: naturally aspirated with 61 or 71 hp, turbo with 84 hp, and 98 or 102 hp as the Brabus.
The fortwo C453 of 2014 shares its platform and engines with the Renault Twingo III: a naturally aspirated 1.0 and a 90 hp 0.9 turbo, which the Brabus lifts to 109 hp. The cdi diesels are the fortwo's 0.8 and the first forfour's 1.5, while the 1.0 mhd is a petrol engine with start-stop and no electric motor. The petrol fortwo C453 went out of production in June 2019, after orders closed in March 2019.
Which module fits which engine
The cdi diesels and the 0.9 turbo work with the GAN GT, rated at up to 30% more power. The 0.6 and 0.7 turbo engines of the fortwo C450 and the Roadster are matched in the catalogue with the GAN GA+, rated at up to 12%. The Roadster's 0.7 turbo comes in three outputs, 61, 82 and 101 hp, the last as the Brabus, and the catalogue covers all three. The naturally aspirated 1.0 of the fortwo C453 gets the GAN GA+ too.
For smart chip tuning on a fortwo C451, bear in mind that the 84 hp turbo and the Brabus versions share the 1.0 turbo engine and differ in output. Of the C451 turbo versions, the catalogue includes the 98 hp Brabus. The 84 hp turbo and the 102 hp Brabus are not in the catalogue. On a fortwo C453, the 90 hp turbo and the Brabus 109 hp share the 0.9 engine.

Two different forfours
The name forfour covers two different cars. The W454 of 2004 to 2006 sits on the Mitsubishi Colt platform with 1.1, 1.3 and 1.5-litre petrol engines, a 1.5 cdi diesel and a 177 hp Brabus 1.5 turbo. The Brabus 1.5 turbo is not in the catalogue.
In the catalogue, the 1.1, 1.3, 1.5 and the 1.5 cdi belong to this W454. The W453 of 2014 is built on the same platform and engines as the fortwo C453, and its petrol versions ended in June 2019. This page does not cover the electric smart models.
Which Smart models are in the catalogue
The catalogue lists 3 models from Smart. The most engines are listed for the ForTwo (16), ForFour (8) and Roadster (3). The biggest gain among the models is on the ForFour: up to +29 hp.
Naturally aspirated Smart engines
For 9 naturally aspirated engines from Smart, there is the GAN GA+: up to 12% more power and up to 15% lower fuel consumption in ECO mode. You can fit it yourself, in most cases in under 15 minutes.
How to find your Smart engine
Choose your model in the list above, then the generation by model year and chassis code, and the engine by the power output in your registration document. The engine page shows the exact gain and the tuning module price.
