What makes the Toyota Caldina special
Toyota Caldina tuning: the 3S-GTE turbo
The Caldina engine to know is the 2.0 GT-Four, a turbocharged 3S-GTE with 260 hp and 324 Nm. Toyota Caldina tuning with a tuning box revolves around this engine, and Caldina GTT turbo or Caldina GT4 tuning means it too. The same 3S-GTE with 260 hp powered the T210 GT-T (ST215) from 1997 and the T240 GT-Four (ST246) from 2002.
The two differ in intercooler size and engine revision: the 4.5th generation of the 3S-GTE against the 5th. 3S-GTE tuning and chip tuning for a Caldina come to the same thing whichever of the two has the engine, since the T210 and T240 share the 260 hp rating.
The two naturally aspirated engines
The 1.8-litre 1ZZ-FE of the T240 makes 132 hp and 170 Nm in the catalogue. The 2.0-litre 1AZ-FSE is listed at 152 hp and 200 Nm, with front-wheel drive (AZT241) or all-wheel drive (AZT246). The first generation, the T190, ran from 1992 to 2002 and the T210 from 1997 to 2002. The T190 offered the 2.0 3S-GE with 175 hp in the TZ-G with all-wheel drive from February 1995.
The T210 range ran from the 1.8 7A-FE and the 2.0 3S-FE with 135 to 140 hp to the 2.0 3S-GE with 190 hp and the 2.2 3C-TE diesel with 94 hp. The T240 was built from September 2002 to June 2007 as a sport estate, with a four-speed automatic and no diesel. Toyota sold the Caldina only in Japan, and the European relative of the T190 estate was the Carina E. The GT-Four also came as the C-Edition and the N-Edition, and its intercooler sits on top of the engine.

What should I check on a 3S-GTE before fitting a module?
Before you fit anything to a used 3S-GTE, check the turbocharger, the oil supply and the cooling. The module itself plugs into the existing connectors and comes off in about a minute.
Which module fits the Caldina 1.8 and the 2.0i?
Both engines work with the GAN GA+ and the GAN GA. With the GAN GA+ the catalogue shows 148 hp and 190 Nm for the 1.8-litre 1ZZ-FE and 170 hp and 224 Nm for the 2.0-litre 1AZ-FSE. The GAN GA+ is rated at up to 12% more power on these engines too.
Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 tune?
Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU remap without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
