Toyota Fortuner tuning: diesels for a heavy car
Toyota Fortuner tuning with a tuning box centres on the diesels. Fortuner 2.8 GD tuning starts at 177 hp and 450 Nm, the figures of the 2015 to 2020 engine. The catalogue covers that 177 hp engine; the 2.8 of 2020 onward, with 204 hp and 500 Nm, is not in the catalogue. Toyota does not sell the Fortuner in Europe: it serves Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Latin America. In Europe the Land Cruiser Prado covers this class.
The 2.4 and 2.8 GD diesels also power the European Hilux, so the engines are familiar even where the car is not. The 2.4 GD has no entry of its own in the Fortuner catalogue: the same engine is listed as the 2.4 D-4D of the Toyota Hilux.
Older diesels and the petrol engines
The first generation, the AN50 and AN60, ran from 2004, and the second, the AN150 and AN160, from 2015. The 3.0-litre 1KD-FTV makes 163 hp and 343 Nm; the 2.5-litre 2KD-FTV made 102 hp and 260 Nm. In some markets the 2.5 gained a variable-geometry turbo in 2012, which lifted it to 144 hp.
The petrol engines are the 2.7-litre 2TR-FE, with about 160 hp in the first generation and 166 hp in the second, and the 4.0-litre 1GR-FE V6 with 238 hp. For Toyota Fortuner chip tuning the petrol engines work with the GAN GA+ and the diesels with the GAN GT.

The 2.8 1GD-FTV goes from 177 hp and 450 Nm to 225 hp and 563 Nm with the GAN GT, according to the catalogue. For a turbo diesel like this one, the GAN GT is rated at up to 30% more power. These are the stated gains for this engine type, not a dyno reading of your car.
Is my 2.5 D-4D a 102 hp or a 144 hp engine?
The earlier engine has 102 hp; the version with the variable-geometry turbo, built from 2012 in some markets, has 144 hp.
Should a Fortuner diesel get a tuning box or an ECU remap?
Unlike an ECU remap, which rewrites the software in the control unit, the GAN module adjusts the sensor signals, and the factory software, checksums and flash counter stay untouched. It comes off in about a minute, and once it is removed no traces remain.
Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 tune?
Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU remap without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
