What makes the Toyota Hiace special

Toyota HiAce tuning: four 2.5 D-4D calibrations under one name

Behind the single label 2.5 D-4D sit four calibrations: 88 and 102 hp until 2006, and 95 and 117 hp after that. Toyota HiAce tuning with a tuning box begins with the build year. Before you tune a HiAce, find out whether it dates from before or after the summer of 2006. The 102 hp engine, sold from November 2001, makes 260 Nm, and the 88 hp version makes 192 Nm.

From the summer of 2006, with stricter emission rules and an intercooler, the range became 95 hp with 230 Nm and 117 hp with 294 Nm. A diesel van from 2001 to 2006 has the 88 or 102 hp 2.5 D-4D; a van of 2010 has the 117 hp engine. All four calibrations of the 2.5 D-4D work with the GAN GT.

Where the van comes from

The European HiAce, the XH10 and XH20, was built from August 1995 until 2012 on the Granvia platform, with the engine and front wheels ahead of the driver. Exports ended in 2012 because the van did not meet Euro 5, and in 2013 the ProAce took its place. The H200 and H300 are Asian vans, not the European HiAce; the catalogue covers them and the Japanese Grand HiAce as well.

The later van is rated at 95 or 117 hp and 230 or 294 Nm in its data sheet. The older H100, sold in Britain from November 1989, had a 2.0-litre 1RZ petrol engine and a 2.4-litre 2L-II diesel.

How much more power does the GAN GT add to the HiAce 2.5 D-4D?

The 102 hp version, with 260 Nm, goes to 133 hp and 337 Nm in the catalogue, and the 117 hp version, with 294 Nm, to 152 hp and 378 Nm. For chip tuning of turbo diesels the GAN GT is rated at up to 30% more power. These are the stated gains for this engine type, not a dyno reading of your car.

Tuning box or ECU remap for a HiAce D-4D?

The GAN module is not an ECU remap: it adjusts the sensor signals, and the factory software, checksums and flash counter stay untouched. Whichever route you take, have the injection, cooling and transmission checked first; more power does not remove the risks that come with age.

Which engine does a HiAce built after 2010 have?

From 2010 the range had the 117 hp diesel as its only engine.

Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 tune?

Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU remap without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
