What makes the Toyota Hilux VIII special
Hilux 2015 tuning: two diesels, chosen by the year
For Toyota Hilux tuning the year matters. The Hilux VIII was shown for Europe at Geneva in 2016, and German deliveries began that summer. Until summer 2020 the Hilux VIII (AN120 and AN130) had a single engine in Europe: the 2.4 D-4D with 150 hp and 400 Nm. That is the 2GD-FTV diesel, with a six-speed manual or automatic and AdBlue.
The 2.8 D-4D with 204 hp and 500 Nm joined the range with the facelift in summer 2020. From 2024 (in Germany from March 2025) it gained a 48-volt mild hybrid system, with the same 204 hp and 500 Nm.
Hilux chip tuning: the GAN GT figures for the 2.8
The 2.8 D-4D, listed in the catalogue as the mild hybrid, goes from 204 hp and 500 Nm to 247 hp and 605 Nm: 43 hp more. The 2.4 D-4D works with the GAN GT too; the figures are in the first answer below.

Hilux 2.4 D-4D 150: how much more power and torque does a GAN GT add?
The engine goes from 150 hp and 400 Nm to 187 hp and 505 Nm; the GAN GT is rated at up to 30% more power. These are the stated gains for this engine type, not a dyno reading of your car.
Does the same module fit the Hilux 2.8 D-4D 204 with the 48V mild hybrid?
The 2.8 D-4D works with the GAN GT, and the engine's 204 hp and 500 Nm are the same with or without the 48-volt system. The 48-volt starter-generator is rated at 16 hp and 65 Nm and assists the engine.
Does a tuning box change DPF regeneration on short trips?
Short city trips under light load can clog a diesel's particulate filter. Regeneration is controlled by the factory ECU software, which the GAN module leaves untouched.
Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 tune?
Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU remap without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
