What makes the Volvo XC70 special
Volvo XC70 tuning: the D5 and its year
The XC70 D5 is dated by its output: 163 hp from July 2002, 185 hp from December 2005, 205 hp from April 2009 and 215 hp from May 2011. Volvo XC70 tuning therefore starts with the year of your car, because the tuning box is matched to the D5 of that year. The D5 is the turbocharged five-cylinder 2.4 diesel, which made 163 hp and 340 Nm until November 2005. The 185 hp version with 400 Nm came with a particulate filter.
The 205 hp and 215 hp versions both make 420 Nm, and the 215 hp car has 440 Nm with the automatic from June 2011. The first XC70 was sold as the V70 XC from 2000, and the second one ran from 2007 to May 2016. Alongside the D5, the second generation had the 2.4D DRIVe with 175 hp and 420 Nm from April 2009 to April 2010. It also had the 2.0 D3 with 163 hp and 400 Nm from April 2010 to June 2013, on front-wheel drive.
Petrol engines and the other versions
The petrol range was the 2.4T with 200 hp and 285 Nm until July 2002 and the 2.5T with 210 hp and 320 Nm until June 2007. The 3.2 six-cylinder with 238 hp and 320 Nm followed from August 2007 to January 2008. The 2.5T works with the GAN GT, while the 2.4T and the 3.2 use the GAN GA+.
The D3 and D4 with all-wheel drive, 163 and 181 hp with 420 Nm, and the Drive-E T5 with 245 hp are not listed separately for the XC70: the same engines appear as the 2.4 D3 AWD, the 2.4 D4 AWD and the 2.0 T5 with 245 hp of the Volvo XC60. The T6 with 304 hp and 440 Nm is not listed for the XC70 either; look for the same engine under the 3.0i of the Volvo S80. The T6 with 285 hp and the front-wheel-drive D4 with 181 hp and 400 Nm are not in the catalogue.

With the GAN GT the 215 hp D5 goes from 215 hp and 420 Nm to 256 hp and 528 Nm. The GAN GT line is rated at up to 30% more power, and the GAN GA+ for the 2.4T and the 3.2 at up to 12%. These are the stated gains for this engine type, not a dyno reading of your car.

Tuning box or ECU remap for the Volvo XC70 D5?
Unlike an ECU remap, a tuning box sits between the engine sensors and the ECU and adjusts their signals. The factory software, checksums and flash counter stay untouched with the module.

The 2.5T works with the GAN GT and is shown in the catalogue with 209 hp against the factory 210 hp and 320 Nm, while the 2.4T with 200 hp and 285 Nm uses the GAN GA+.
Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 tune?
Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU remap without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
