What makes the BMW 5 Series E60 special
BMW E60 tuning: the badge misleads twice
On the E60 the badge misleads in two different ways, so BMW E60 tuning with a tuning box goes by the engine underneath. Engine power is what this page covers, not styling parts. The 520i with 170 hp was a 2.2-litre six-cylinder M54B22 from 2003 to 2005. From September 2007 it was a 2.0-litre four-cylinder N43B20 with direct injection. The 525i with 218 hp was the 2.5-litre N52 from July 2005, and after the March 2007 facelift it was the 3.0-litre N53.
The 525d had a 2.5-litre M57 with 177 hp until January 2007 and a 3.0-litre M57 with 197 hp afterwards. The 530d made 218 hp at the start, then 231 hp, and 235 hp after the facelift. The 535d with two turbochargers made 272 hp until the facelift and 286 hp afterwards.
Which module applies
The naturally aspirated 520i, 523i, 525i and 530i work with the GAN GA+, and the diesels with the GAN GT. The saloon E60 was launched in July 2003, the Touring E61 followed in April 2004, and the facelift was shown on 24 March 2007. The 530d is the best-selling E60, while ADAC treats the 520d as the entry diesel.
BMW 5 Series E60 chip tuning: questions
BMW E60 530d with 218, 231 or 235 hp: which is which, and what does chip tuning with the GAN GT give?
The 218 hp car is the earliest, up to July 2005, the 231 hp car follows, and the 235 hp car came with the facelift of 2007. Of these, the 231 hp car with 500 Nm is listed at 277 hp and 620 Nm with the GAN GT. Read these as the stated gains for this engine type, not as a dyno reading of your own E60.
Is the N47 timing chain a concern on a 520d E60 from September 2007?
The 163 hp 520d has the M47, and from September 2007 the 177 hp car has the N47. The N47 chain sits on the gearbox side and can stretch; a rattle on a cold start is the sign. Have the chain checked from about 100 thousand km.
What are the swirl flaps on the E60 530d and 525d, and do they matter for chiptuning?
On the M57 in the 530d and 525d, the swirl flaps in the intake manifold can break and drop into a cylinder. The metal flaps fitted to some versions are the ones prone to breaking, so have them checked before fitting a tuning box.
Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 tune?
Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU remap without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
