About the generation

What makes the BMW 5 Series G30 special

BMW G30 tuning: one B58, several power figures

The BMW 540i G30 has one 3.0-litre B58 six-cylinder, listed at 340 hp before the facelift and 333 hp after it, both at 450 Nm. The post-facelift car also has a 48-volt on-board system. The G30 is the saloon and the G31 the Touring, shown in October 2016 and facelifted in July 2020.

So the build date decides which 540i a tuning box is matched to, and the same goes for the 530d. The 530d changed from one turbocharger with 265 hp and 620 Nm to two turbochargers with 286 hp and 650 Nm. The M550i xDrive has the twin-turbo V8 N63, rated at 462 hp and later at 530 hp.

With the GAN GT the 540i with 340 hp reaches 416 hp and 550 Nm, and the 333 hp car 390 hp. These are the stated gains for this engine type, not a dyno reading of your car.

BMW 5 Series G30 chip tuning: questions

BMW 540i G30: 340 hp or 333 hp, which is mine?

Cars built before July 2020 make 340 hp; those after the facelift make 333 hp. Both work with the GAN GT and have the same 450 Nm of stock torque.

Which GAN module fits the BMW 520d G30?

The 520d has the B47 with 190 hp and 400 Nm. The GAN GT is the module for it. On the 520d the 48-volt mild hybrid arrived in November 2019, before the facelift.

BMW 530d G30: tuning box or ECU remap?

A tuning box leaves the factory software in the engine control unit as it is; an ECU remap replaces it. Your manufacturer's warranty is preserved: the ECU software is never changed, and the module can be removed at any time.

Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 tune?

Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU remap without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
