What makes the Mazda 3 III special
Mazda 3 tuning on the BM and BN
Mazda 3 3rd gen tuning is mostly a petrol question: in Germany petrol made up 80–95% of BM and BN registrations from 2014 to 2018. The diesel share fell from 20% in 2014 to 5% in 2018. The hatchback arrived on 18 October 2013 and the saloon on 14 February 2014; the BN facelift followed in February 2017. Mazda 3 2013 hatchback tuning therefore means an early BM. Production for Europe ended in March 2019. For Mazda 3 chip tuning with a tuning box, the petrol engines are the 1.5-litre SKYACTIV-G 100 and the 2.0-litre SKYACTIV-G 120 and 165; all three work with the GAN GA+.
The SKYACTIV-G 100 has 100 hp and 150 Nm, direct injection and no turbocharger. The six-speed automatic comes with the SKYACTIV-G 120 and with both diesels. The 2.2 SKYACTIV-D 150, with 150 hp, 380 Nm and two-stage turbocharging, was built from October 2013 to March 2019 and works with the GAN GT. The 1.5 SKYACTIV-D 105, built from January 2016, is not in the catalogue.

How much does the BM 2.2 SKYACTIV-D 150 gain with a tuning box?
The catalogue lists the diesel at 150 hp and 380 Nm, and with the GAN GT at 193 hp and 481 Nm. That is 43 hp more, the largest gain of any engine in this generation. These are the stated gains for this engine type, not a dyno reading of your car.
What does a tuning box add to the SKYACTIV-G 120 and 165?
Both are 2.0-litre engines with 210 Nm, and both use the GAN GA+. The catalogue gain is 14 hp and 25 Nm for the SKYACTIV-G 120 and 20 hp and 25 Nm for the SKYACTIV-G 165.
And the smallest petrol engine, the SKYACTIV-G 100?
The 1.5-litre engine has 100 hp and 150 Nm, and the catalogue gain for it is 12 hp and 18 Nm. As the smallest engine of the generation it also gets the smallest gain in absolute terms.
Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 tune?
Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU remap without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
