What makes the Mercedes-Benz E W212 special

W212 tuning: an E 200 is two different engines

An E 200 on the W212 is two engines under one name. Until February 2013 it is the 1.8-litre M271 turbo, and from March 2013 the 2.0-litre M274 turbo. That is the first thing to know about W212 tuning with a tuning box. Both make 184 hp, but the engine code and the displacement differ: 1,796 cc for the M271 and 1,991 cc for the M274.

The facelift went into series production on 1 March 2013 and reached dealers in April 2013. The E 250 changed at the same time, from 204 hp and 310 Nm as the CGI to 211 hp and 350 Nm with the M274. The petrol fours and the CDI diesels work with the GAN GT, and so does the twin-turbo V6 of the E 400 with 333 hp from 2013.

Naturally aspirated V6 and body codes

The naturally aspirated V6 engines of the E 300 and E 350 use the GAN GA+. The E 300 has 231 hp, later 252 hp, and the E 350 has 272, 292 and then 306 hp. The W212 is the saloon and the S212 is the estate, while the C207 coupé and the A207 cabriolet are a separate series.

The saloon was built from 2009 to January 2016, and the estate until May 2016. Start from the build date of your car and its engine code.

Mercedes W212 chiptuning for an E 200: which module and how much more power?

The catalogue lists the E 200 at 184 hp and 270 Nm, and with the GAN GT at 236 hp and 355 Nm. These are the stated gains for this engine type, not a dyno reading of your car. Cars built up to February 2013 and from March 2013 have different engines, so check the year of your car.

W212 facelift tuning: which engines changed in March 2013?

From March 2013 the E 180, E 200 and E 250 use the M274 engine, and the E 180 with 156 hp and 250 Nm joined the range. The V6 range changed earlier: the E 300 moved from a 3.0-litre V6 with 231 hp to a 3.5-litre V6 with 252 hp in September 2011. The four-cylinder diesels kept the OM 651 and stayed with the GAN GT.

Is the V6 in a W212 E 300 or E 350 covered?

Yes: the V6 engines of the E 300 and E 350 are naturally aspirated, and the catalogue pairs them with the GAN GA+. That means up to 12%, less than the turbo E 200 or the CDI diesels get. The E 350 with 272 hp and 350 Nm goes to 294 hp and 378 Nm; the figures depend on output and year.

Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 tune?

Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU remap without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
