What makes the Opel Astra J special
Astra J tuning: six engines behind one “1.6”
Which 1.6 is in your Astra J? Astra J tuning follows the engine code, not the number on the badge. For Opel Astra 1.6 chip tuning, the badge could mean any one of six engines. The A16XER with 115 hp has no turbocharger and runs a timing belt, so the tuning box for it is the GAN GA+. The turbo petrols are the A16LET with 179 hp, built until November 2012, the A16XHT with 170 hp and the A16SHT with 200 hp.
The 1.6 SIDI Turbo has direct injection, and the 200 hp version belongs to the three-door GTC. The 1.6 CDTI is a turbodiesel with 110 and 136 hp, available from May 2014. Those turbo petrols and the 1.6 CDTI work with the GAN GT. So do the older 1.7 CDTI with 110, 125 and 131 hp and the 1.4 Turbo with 120 and 140 hp. Across the Channel the same car is sold as the Vauxhall Astra Mk6.
Bodies and facelift
Sales of the Astra J began on 4 December 2009 with the five-door hatchback. The Sports Tourer followed in November 2010 and the three-door GTC in January 2012. The saloon arrived in September 2012, together with the facelift.

What does Opel Astra GTC chiptuning give the 1.6 SIDI Turbo with 200 hp?
The catalogue lists this engine at 200 hp and 280 Nm, and with the GAN GT at 256 hp and 365 Nm. The GAN GT adds up to 30% more power on turbocharged engines. The OPC, badged Astra VXR in Great Britain, runs the 2.0 Turbo with 280 hp; with the GAN GT the catalogue gain is 48 hp. These are the stated gains for this engine type, not a dyno reading of your car.
Which GAN module fits the Astra J 1.6 with 115 hp?
The A16XER with 115 hp and 155 Nm is listed at 129 hp and 174 Nm with the GAN GA+.
Which version is my Astra J 1.6 CDTI, the 110 hp or the 136 hp?
The 110 hp version has 300 Nm, the 136 hp version 320 Nm. The catalogue gain with the GAN GT is 33 hp for the 110 hp version and 40 hp for the 136 hp version.
Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 tune?
Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU remap without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
