What makes the Porsche 911 996 special
Porsche 911 996 tuning: the 3.4 or the 3.6
Porsche 911 996 tuning with a tuning box depends on the year of your car, because the year decides the engine. The 996.1 until 2001 has the 3.4; the 996.2 from model year 2002 has the 3.6. The Carrera 3.4 has 300 hp and 350 Nm, the Carrera 3.6 320 hp and 370 Nm. The 996 was the first 911 with water cooling, and it came with a six-speed manual or the Tiptronic S.
Both are naturally aspirated flat-sixes that work with the GAN GA+. The 996 Turbo with 420 hp, the Turbo S with 450 hp and the later GT3 with 381 hp are not in the catalogue. The first 996 GT3 with 360 hp is listed on the Porsche 911 GT3 page.
The IMS bearing
A known weak point of the 996 is the intermediate shaft bearing of the M96 engine, the IMS. If it fails, the valve timing is lost and the engine is destroyed; the early 3.4 is most often linked to such failures. When buying, ask for proof that the bearing has been checked or replaced.

A tuning box does not repair or replace the bearing, so its condition needs checking first.
What does the GAN GA+ add to the 996 Carrera 3.4 and 3.6?
For the 3.4 the catalogue shows 324 hp and 378 Nm, from 300 hp and 350 Nm. For the 3.6 it shows 346 hp and 400 Nm, from 320 hp and 370 Nm. These are the stated gains for this engine type, not a dyno reading of your car. The GAN GA+ line states gains of up to 12%.
Porsche 996 ECU tuning or a tuning box?
ECU tuning means new software in the engine control unit, while the GAN module adjusts sensor signals and leaves no trace once it is removed.
Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 tune?
Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU remap without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
