What makes the Toyota RAV4 IV special
RAV4 Mk4 tuning: the 2016 facelift changed the diesels
On a RAV4 Mk4 (XA40) the build year tells you which engine you have. That matters for RAV4 tuning with a tuning box, because the diesels changed at the facelift in January 2016. Before it, the diesels were a 2.0 D-4D with 124 hp and a 2.2 D-4D with 150 hp, sold from April 2013.
After it, Toyota fitted a 2.0 D-4D with 143 hp, an engine from BMW, and added a 2.5 Hybrid for the first time. The two 2.0 diesels are unrelated engines, not one family.
Toyota RAV4 tuning for the early diesels: what the GAN GT adds
For chip tuning, the 2.0 D-4D with 124 hp and 310 Nm goes to 161 hp and 395 Nm with the GAN GT. The 2.2 D-4D with 150 hp and 340 Nm goes to 193 hp and 433 Nm. That is 37 hp and 43 hp more; the GAN GT is rated at up to 30% more power.
The 2.0 D-4D with 143 hp has no entry of its own in the RAV4 IV catalogue: the same engine is listed as the 2.0 D-4D of the Toyota Avensis III. The 2.0 Valvematic petrol engine with 151 hp and 195 Nm goes to 169 hp and 218 Nm with the GAN GA+, rated at up to 12% more power.

Which diesel is in my RAV4 Mk4: the 2.0 D-4D 124 or the 2.0 D-4D 143?
Built between April 2013 and January 2016, a RAV4 2.0 D-4D has Toyota's own 124 hp engine, code 1AD-FTV; the 2.2 D-4D with 150 hp was sold alongside it. From February 2016 the 2.0 D-4D is the 143 hp BMW engine, code 2WW.
RAV4 2.2 D-4D 150 and 2.2 D-CAT 150: is it the same module?
The catalogue lists both versions together as the 2.2 D-4D. The 2.2 D-CAT is the version with the six-speed automatic, the 2.2 D-4D the one with the manual; both make 150 hp and 340 Nm.
RAV4 Hybrid 197 hp: is that the combined figure?
Yes, 197 hp is the combined output; the 2.5 petrol engine makes 155 hp and 210 Nm. On this page you will find the 2.5 Hybrid under the name 2.5h, with 197 hp.
Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 tune?
Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU remap without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
