What makes the Volkswagen Transporter T4 special
VW T4 tuning: the 2.5 TDI behind the camper
The VW T4 (Typ 7D) was built from September 1990 to June 2003, and the catalogue section 2000–03 covers only its last stretch. It came as Transporter, Caravelle, Multivan and the California camper by Westfalia, and the VW T4 camper is the best-known version today. The T4a has the short nose; from 1996 the Caravelle, Multivan and California got the long nose (T4b), while the van kept the short one. For VW T4 tuning with a tuning box the catalogue has two versions, both of the five-cylinder 2.5 TDI. One is the 88 hp version, the only one without an intercooler; the other is the 102 hp version.
Both are turbo diesels and work with the GAN GA+. The 2.5 TDI with 151 hp, the 2.0 and 2.5 petrol engines and the 2.8 VR6 with 140 hp are not in the catalogue. The 151 hp version was sold only as Caravelle and Multivan with the long nose. The 102 hp engine with the code AXL, built from 2001, is a detuned version of that 151 hp engine, made for the Syncro. The 2.8 VR6 with 204 hp is listed on the VW Multivan page.

Fitting the GAN GA+ to the 88 hp version with 195 Nm brings it to 99 hp and 218 Nm.
How much more power does VW T4 2.5 TDI chip tuning give the 102 hp version?
The 2.5 TDI with 102 hp and 250 Nm goes to 114 hp and 280 Nm with the GAN GA+. The GAN GA+ is rated at up to 12% more power; these are the stated gains for this engine type, not a dyno reading of your car.
Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 tune?
Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU remap without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
