Lada 4x4 tuning: one engine, many names
Lada Niva tuning with a tuning box is a short story: one main petrol engine, many names. In Germany and Austria it is also the Lada Taiga, in Britain the Cossack and the Hussar, and in Italy the Job. Lada 4x4 and Niva Legend are the current names of the same model. The same car also goes by the factory codes 2121, 21213 and 21214, which helps when you read an advert or a parts list.
Lada Taiga tuning therefore means the same engine as Lada 4x4 tuning. The engine is the 1.7i of the VAZ-21214 family, with 1690 cc, eight valves and multi-point injection. It makes 83 hp at 5000 rpm and 129 Nm at 4000 rpm, and it drives all four wheels through a five-speed manual gearbox and a transfer case.
What a GAN GA+ means for a Niva
The 1.7i is naturally aspirated, so for Niva 1.7 tuning the module is the GAN GA+, and the main version has 83 hp. Other 1.7i versions in the catalogue have 80 and 81 hp, so check the output in your registration papers before you choose. Euro 5 versions of the 1.7i with 83 hp were sold in Germany until the late 2010s.
The Chevrolet Niva, sold as the Niva Travel from 2021, is a different model with other engines and was not sold officially in the EU. Lada Niva chip tuning is a modest gain in absolute terms, as it is for any naturally aspirated engine.

What does a GAN GA+ give the Lada Niva 1.7i?
The GAN GA+ lifts the 83 hp 1.7i to 93 hp and its torque from 129 Nm to 144 Nm. The GAN GA+ gives up to 12% more power, which is the ceiling for a naturally aspirated engine. These are the stated gains for this engine type, not a dyno reading of your car.
Do the Niva, the Taiga and the 4x4 share the same engine?
Yes, the Niva, the Taiga, the Cossack, the Hussar, the Job, the Lada 4x4 and the Niva Legend are names of one model. The 1.7i with 83 hp is the engine to look up for all of them.
Does the module affect the transfer case or the four-wheel drive?
The module does not reprogram the gearbox, and it works on the engine signals only. The transfer case and the permanent four-wheel drive are not part of what it adjusts.
Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 tune?
Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU remap without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
