What makes the Volkswagen Golf IV special
Golf 4 tuning: pump-injector diesels and the petrol range
On a Golf 4, 150 hp means either the 1.9 TDI with pump injectors or the 1.8T of the GTI, and both work with the GAN GA+. The PD diesel (EA188) came with 101, 115, 131 and 150 hp. For Golf 4 tuning with a tuning box all four use the GAN GA+, with the 115 hp version shown in the catalogue as 116. Older 1.9 TDI versions with a distributor pump, 90 and 110 hp, existed too.
The Golf IV, also called Golf Mk4 or Typ 1J, was built as a hatchback from October 1997 to August 2003; the Variant ran until 2006. Europe saw no facelift of the body, only step-by-step updates of engines and equipment.
Petrol engines from the 1.4 to the VR6
The petrol range starts with the 1.4 with 75 hp and the 1.6 with 101 and 105 hp. It continues with the 2.0 with 115 hp, the 2.3 VR5 with 170 hp and the 2.8 VR6 with 204 hp. The 1.8T with 150 hp is a turbo petrol engine, and the GTI had the same output.
The 1.9 TDI with 90 hp and the 1.8T with 180 hp of the GTI anniversary model do not appear under their own names for the Golf IV: you will find the same engines as the 1.9 TDI with 90 hp and the 1.8T RS of the Skoda Octavia. The 1.9 TDI with 110 hp and the R32 are not in the catalogue.

How much power does the GAN GA+ add to the Golf 4 1.6 and 2.0?
The 1.6 with 105 hp goes to 118 hp and the 2.0, listed at 116 hp, to 130 hp with the GAN GA+. The stated gain for the GAN GA+ on these engines is up to 12% more power.
How much power does the GAN GA+ add to the Golf 4 1.9 TDI with 131 hp?
The pump-injector 1.9 TDI rated at 131 hp and 310 Nm reaches 147 hp and 347 Nm with the GAN GA+. The ADAC rates the 1.9 TDI engines as very durable.
Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 tune?
Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU remap without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
