About the generation

What makes the Volkswagen Golf VII special

Golf 7 tuning: three engine families and the 7.5 facelift

The Golf VII was built in Europe from August 2012 to 2020, and from April 2019 the three-door body survived only as the GTI TCR. The facelift, called Golf 7.5, was shown in November 2016 and reached dealers in early 2017. The car is also known as the Golf 7 or Golf Mk7.

Three engine families matter for Golf 7 tuning with a tuning box: the EA211 petrol engines from 1.0 to 1.4 TSI, the EA288 diesels, and the EA888 of the GTI and the R. The EA111 of the Golf 6 was never fitted to the Golf VII.

From the 1.6 TDI to the Golf R

For Golf 7 GTI tuning: the GTI came with 220, 230 (Performance), 245 and 265 hp, the Golf R with 300 hp and, after the facelift, 310 hp. The GTI with 220, 230 and 245 hp and the R with 300 and 310 hp work with the GAN GT. The 2.0 TDI with 150 hp and the GTD with 184 hp share the EA288 family, and both use the GAN GT. The 1.6 TDI came with 90, 105, 110 and 115 hp, and all four are matched to the GAN GT.

The 1.5 TSI evo with 130 hp of the facelift is not in the catalogue. The 1.5 TSI evo with 150 hp is not listed separately for the Golf VII: you will find the same engine as the 1.5 TSI of the VW T-Roc. The GTE plug-in hybrid is not in the catalogue.

How much more power does Golf 7 chiptuning give the 2.0 TDI with 150 hp?

With the GAN GT the 2.0 TDI of 150 hp and 320 Nm reaches 188 hp and 409 Nm. The GAN GT line is rated at up to 30% more power; these are the stated gains for this engine type, not a dyno reading of your car.

Does Golf 7 chip tuning change anything about the DSG gearbox?

With the 1.0 to 1.5 TSI and the 1.6 TDI, the Golf VII can have the 7-speed dry-clutch DSG (DQ200). Its torque limit is 250 Nm, which can restrict tuning on these engines. The module does not reprogram the gearbox.

Does the diesel scandal concern a Golf 7 2.0 TDI?

The Golf VII runs on the EA288, and on 22 October 2015 VW stated that the EA288 versions contained no prohibited defeat devices. The KBA recall of 15 October 2015 covered 2.4 million cars with the EA189, which means the Golf VI and older.

Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 tune?

Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU remap without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
