About the generation

What makes the Volkswagen Passat B6 special

Passat B6 tuning: pump injector or common rail

Two Passat B6 diesels can show the same 140 hp and 320 Nm and still be different engines. Until early 2008 the 2.0 TDI was a pump-injector engine, the EA188 PD, and during 2008 the common rail EA189 replaced it. The catalogue keeps them apart: the pump-injector versions use the GAN GA+, the common rail versions the GAN GT. So for Passat B6 tuning with a tuning box the build date matters. The car, also called the Passat 3C, was built from February 2005 to July 2010.

Common rail diesels, petrol engines and the R36

The common rail 2.0 TDI came with 110, 140 and 170 hp, and the BlueTDI with 143 hp; they work with the GAN GT, as does the 1.6 TDI with 105 hp. The 1.9 TDI with 105 hp uses the GAN GA+. The 1.8 TSI with 160 hp and the 2.0 TSI with 200 hp also work with the GAN GT.

In January 2008 the 2.0 TSI changed engine family, from the belt-driven EA113 to the chain-driven EA888. The R36, a 3.6 FSI with 299 hp and 4Motion, is naturally aspirated and works with the GAN GA+.

How do I tell a pump-injector 2.0 TDI from a common rail 2.0 TDI on a Passat B6?

The pump-injector 2.0 TDI has no fuel rail; the common rail version with 140 hp has the code CBAB, the 170 hp version CBBB. The switch was gradual from February 2008, so a car from early 2008 can have either engine.

How much more power does Passat B6 chiptuning give a 2.0 TDI with 140 hp?

With the GAN GA+, the pump-injector engine goes from 140 hp and 320 Nm to 157 hp and 358 Nm. With the GAN GT, the common rail engine goes from 140 hp and 320 Nm to 160 hp and 381 Nm. The GAN GA+ is rated at up to 12% more power and the GAN GT at up to 30%. These are the stated gains for these engine types, not a dyno reading of your car.

What should I check on a pump-injector Passat B6 before fitting a tuning box?

On the pump-injector 2.0 TDI, the hexagon shaft that drives the oil pump can wear, and the engine can then suffer oil starvation.

Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 tune?

Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU remap without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
