What makes the Volkswagen Passat B8 special
Passat B8 tuning: before and after the 2019 facelift
The Passat B8 (Typ 3G, MQB platform) was built from July 2014 to June 2019 and reached customers in November 2014. This page covers Passat B8 tuning with a tuning box for the pre-facelift cars. The facelift, shown in spring 2019 for model year 2020, has a generation of its own in the catalogue.
The first point to settle on a B8 2.0 TDI is whether the diesel scandal concerns it. The B8 runs on the EA288, not the EA189 behind the scandal; on 22 October 2015 VW stated that the EA288 versions contained no prohibited defeat devices.
Passat B8 diesel and petrol engines
The diesels are the 1.6 TDI BlueMotion with 120 hp and the 2.0 TDI with 150 and 190 hp, topped by the 2.0 BiTDI with 239 hp. In the catalogue all four work with the GAN GT. On the petrol side there are the 1.4 TSI with 125 hp and the 1.4 TSI ACT with 150 hp, which can switch off cylinders. Above them sit the 1.8 TSI with 180 hp and the 2.0 TSI with 220 and 280 hp.
The 1.4 TSI, the ACT version and the 2.0 TSI with 220 and 280 hp use the GAN GT too. From 2018 the range also had the 1.5 TSI with 150 hp. The 1.5 TSI is not listed separately for the Passat B8: look for the same engine under the VW T-Roc 1.5 TSI. The 280 hp version was built until November 2018, when a 272 hp engine replaced it.

How much more power does chiptuning give a VW Passat B8 2.0 TDI with 150 hp?
With the GAN GT the 2.0 TDI with 150 hp and 340 Nm reaches 188 hp and 429 Nm. The GAN GT line is rated at up to 30% more power; these are the stated gains for this engine type, not a dyno reading of your car.
What about the DSG gearbox of the Passat B8 2.0 BiTDI with 239 hp?
The BiTDI with 239 hp has the DQ500 DSG. The module does not reprogram the gearbox.
Are the Passat Alltrack and the GTE covered separately?
The Alltrack is a Variant with 4Motion and a raised ride height, sold from June 2015. It has the 2.0 TDI in 150, 190 and 239 hp and the 2.0 TSI with 220 hp. The Alltrack has no separate figures, so you choose by engine and power. The GTE is a plug-in hybrid with a 1.4 TSI and 218 hp of system output. For the GTE, look under the Škoda Superb III rather than the Passat B8: the same engine appears there as the 1.4 TSI Hybrid 218.
Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 tune?
Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU remap without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
