What makes the BMW 3 Series E36 special
BMW E36 tuning for a rear-wheel-drive car
The BMW E36 is a rear-wheel-drive car often seen on track days. For a tuning box on the E36 the engine is what counts, and the catalogue lists three naturally aspirated petrol engines. The E36 was built from 1990 to 2000; the year 2000 in the catalogue marks the end of the Compact, not the start of the car.
The 320i makes 150 hp and 190 Nm, with the M50 until 1995 and with the M52 from 1994. The 328i has the M52 with 280 Nm from January 1995. The 318is has the 1.9-litre M44 with 180 Nm from 1996, while the 1.8-litre M42 before it had 175 Nm.

What does a GAN GA+ add to an E36 320i or 328i on the track?
On a naturally aspirated four or six, the GAN GA+ gives up to 12% more power.
What about the Nikasil bores of the early E36 M52 sixes?
On the early M52 sixes built from 1994 to 1998, the Nikasil coating of the bores can wear when the engine runs on high-sulphur fuel. BMW changed to iron cylinder liners, and the later M52TÜ did not have this problem. The M50 of the 320i and 325i before 1995 plays no part in that story.
BMW E36 chip tuning with a tuning box or an ECU remap?
The GAN module sits between the engine sensors and the ECU and adjusts their signals, so the factory software stays untouched. It comes off in about a minute, and nothing is written to the ECU.
Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 tune?
Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU remap without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
