About the generation

What makes the BMW 3 Series E90 special

BMW E90 tuning: September 2007 split the range

For BMW E90 tuning with a tuning box the build date of your car decides which engine version applies. The subject is engine power, not styling parts or body kits. From September 2007 the N43 with direct injection replaced the N46 in the four-cylinder petrol cars. The 318i went from 129 to 143 hp and the 320i from 150 to 170 hp. The diesels moved from the M47 to the N47, and the 320d went from 163 to 177 hp while the 318d went from 122 to 143 hp.

The 325i kept 218 hp but changed from the 2.5-litre N52 to the 3.0-litre N53 with direct injection. The facelift of September 2008 moved the 330d to the N57 with 245 hp, and in March 2010 the 320d reached 184 hp. The 335i made 306 hp throughout, and in March 2010 the N55 with one twin-scroll turbo replaced the N54 with two turbos.

E90 bodies and production

The E90 saloon was built until October 2011 and the E91 Touring from September 2005 to May 2012. The E92 coupé ran from June 2006 to June 2013 and the E93 cabriolet until October 2013. About 3.0 million E9x cars were built in total, and the peak year was 2007 with more than half a million cars.

BMW E90 325i chiptuning with 2.5 litres or 3.0 litres: which one is in the catalogue?

The 325i made 218 hp with both engines. The 2.5-litre N52 (January 2005 to August 2007) has 250 Nm, and the 3.0-litre N53 (from September 2007) has 270 Nm. The version with 218 hp and 270 Nm in the catalogue is the 3.0-litre N53, and it works with the GAN GA+. The 2.5-litre N52 is not listed separately for the 3 Series; it appears as the 525i of the BMW 5 Series E60.

Is the N47 timing chain a concern on a 320d E90 from September 2007?

The N47 chain sits on the gearbox side and wears, and a metallic rattle from the back of the engine is the warning sign. The worst-affected engines were built from March 2007 to January 2009, and a check from about 100 thousand km makes sense.

What does BMW E90 chip tuning with a tuning box add to a 320i with 150 hp and with 170 hp?

The N46 goes from 150 hp and 200 Nm to 168 hp and 224 Nm, and the N43 from 170 hp and 210 Nm to 190 hp and 235 Nm. Both engines are naturally aspirated and work with the GAN GA+, rated at up to 12% more power. Treat these figures as stated gains for the engine type, not as a dyno reading of your own car.

Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 tune?

Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU remap without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
