What makes the BMW 3 Series E46 special
BMW E46 tuning: what the German fleet runs
BMW E46 tuning on this page means more engine power from a tuning box, not body kits or styling parts. On 1 January 2025 the German register held more than a hundred thousand E46 cars. The biggest groups were the 316ti Compact with 116 hp, the 320Ci cabriolet with 170 hp and the 320i saloon with 170 hp.
The 318i with 118 hp and the 330Ci with 231 hp follow. These groups all have naturally aspirated petrol engines, and such engines work with the GAN GA+.
The E46 diesels and body codes
The 320d went from 136 hp to 150 hp in September 2001 with the common rail M47TÜ. The 330d reached 204 hp in March 2003 with the M57TÜ. The saloon was built from April 1998 to February 2005 and the Touring from October 1999 to June 2005. The coupé ran until June 2006, the cabriolet until February 2007 and the Compact from June 2001 to December 2004. The body codes are written E46/4 for the saloon, E46/3 for the Touring and E46/2 for the coupé.

BMW 3 Series E46 chip tuning: questions
BMW E46 320d with 136 hp or 150 hp: which one does your car have, and what does chip tuning with the GAN GT add?
The 136 hp car is the earlier M47, and the 150 hp car is the M47TÜ with common rail from September 2001. With the GAN GT, the 150 hp engine goes from 150 hp and 330 Nm to 193 hp and 421 Nm. These are the stated gains for this engine type, not a dyno reading of your own car.
E46 swirl flaps and the 330d automatic: what matters before tuning?
On the M47TÜ and M57 diesels the mounting screws of the intake swirl flaps can work loose, and a flap can fall into a cylinder. Blanking off or removing the flaps is the usual fix. The 330d with 204 hp and 410 Nm has an automatic gearbox rated for 390 Nm, so its torque is limited to 390 Nm in software. Because the module leaves the gearbox alone, the 390 Nm limit stays in place.
What can E46 chiptuning do for a 320i or 318i?
The 320i and 318i are naturally aspirated, so they use the GAN GA+, rated at up to 12% more power. On a 170 hp engine such as the 320i that is at most about 20 hp.
Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 tune?
Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU remap without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
