Mini Chip Tuning
Up to 30% more power for your Mini
The Mini catalogue lists 116 engines (models: 9, generations: 13). For 89% of the engines, there are the GAN GT (up to 30% more power) and GAN GTL (up to 25%) tuning modules; for 13 naturally aspirated engines, the GAN GA and GAN GA+ (up to 12%). Each engine’s figures are on its own page.
Mini chip tuning without an ECU remap
The tuning module sits between the sensors and the engine control unit (ECU) and adjusts their signals. Your manufacturer’s warranty is preserved: the ECU software is never changed, and the module can be removed at any time.

Mini chip tuning: questions
Cooper S, supercharged or turbo: which GAN GT figures apply to mine?
The Cooper S of the R53 is supercharged, with 163 hp; from the R56 onwards the Cooper S is a turbo. The supercharged Cooper S of the R53 is not in the catalogue. The turbo Cooper S of the R56 with 174 hp gains 37 hp and 50 Nm, and the version with 184 hp gains 39 hp and 50 Nm.
How much more power does a naturally aspirated Mini Cooper get from a tuning box?
The Cooper 1.6 is rated at 116 hp and 150 Nm, and at 130 hp and 168 Nm with the GAN GA+. The GAN GA+ gives up to 12% more power, so expect no more than that from a naturally aspirated engine. These are the stated gains for this engine type, not a dyno reading of your car.
What do the Mini diesels get from a tuning box?
The diesels from the One D to the Cooper SD all work with the GAN GT, rated at up to 30% more power. The Countryman R60 Cooper D with 111 hp gains 32 hp and 78 Nm, and the Cooper SD with 143 hp gains 41 hp and 88 Nm.
Tuning box or remap for a Mini?
Mini chiptuning splits into two methods: an ECU remap rewrites the factory software in the engine control unit (ECU), while the GAN tuning module sits between the engine sensors and the ECU and adjusts their signals. The factory software, checksums and flash counter stay untouched, and the engine's factory protections remain active. Your manufacturer's warranty is preserved: the ECU software is never changed, and the module can be removed at any time.
Which GAN module fits the Mini Coupé and Roadster?
The Coupé (R58) and the Roadster (R59) share the Cooper S with 184 hp, the John Cooper Works with 211 hp and the Cooper SD with 143 hp, and the GAN GT covers all three.
Does the GAN module affect my Mini warranty?
No. The module does not change the ECU software and can be removed at any time, so your manufacturer’s warranty is preserved. We also give an engine warranty: 2 years with the GAN GT, 1 year with the GAN GTL.
Tuning box or ECU remap: which should I choose?
An ECU remap permanently changes the maps in the ECU and leaves a trace in the flash counter. The GAN tuning module adjusts the sensor signals instead: the ECU stays in factory condition, and you can return the car to stock in about a minute.
Mini chip tuning: what to know about the engines
Mini tuning: the badge hides three engine eras
Mini tuning with a tuning box is a question of engine era: the badge on the boot lid stays the same while the engine family underneath changes. BMW has built the Mini since 2001, and its engines fall into three eras. First the Tritec 1.6 of the first generation, then the Prince engines of the R56 family, and finally the modular BMW petrol and diesel engines of the F generation. The version name tells you the engine: One is the entry version, Cooper the middle one, a D in the name means a diesel, and SD is the strongest diesel. For Mini Cooper S tuning the engine always has forced induction, but its form changes: a supercharger on the R53, a turbo on the R56 and the Countryman R60, and a 2.0 turbo on the F56 and the Countryman F60.
The Tritec and Prince eras
The first generation (R50 and R52, 2001–2006) used the naturally aspirated Tritec 1.6, with 90 hp in the One and 116 hp in the Cooper; the Cooper S of the R53 had a supercharger. Both work with the GAN GA+: the One gains 11 hp and 17 Nm, and the Cooper gains 14 hp and 18 Nm. From 2006 the Prince engines took over, with the N12 and N16 naturally aspirated and the N14 and N18 turbocharged.
With the GAN GT, the Cooper S of the R56 with 184 hp gains 39 hp and 50 Nm. The One of the Countryman R60 with 98 hp has the naturally aspirated N16 and gains 12 hp and 18 Nm.

The BMW era
On the F56 the One with 102 hp is a three-cylinder turbo, the Cooper with 136 hp has a turbo 1.5, and the GAN GT fits both. The gains are 30 hp and 52 Nm for the One and 39 hp and 64 Nm for the Cooper. For Mini Countryman tuning, the Cooper S of the F60 is a 2.0 turbo with 192 hp, and it gains 40 hp and 59 Nm. The diesels use the GAN GT too: the Cooper SD with 190 hp of the Clubman F54 gains 35 hp and 105 Nm, and the Cooper D with 116 hp of the Cabrio F57 gains 35 hp and 79 Nm.
The Cooper S timing chain
On the Cooper S with the N14 engine, the timing chain and its tensioner are a known weak point, and a worn chain can rattle on a cold start. Mini service bulletins cover N14 engines built until about May 2009 and put the noise down to an under-tensioned chain or a tensioner that is not filled with oil.
Which Mini models are in the catalogue
The catalogue lists 9 models from Mini. The most engines are listed for the Mini (30), Clubman (22) and Countryman (22). The biggest gain among the models is on the Mini: up to +46 hp.
Naturally aspirated Mini engines
For 13 naturally aspirated engines from Mini, there is the GAN GA+: up to 12% more power and up to 15% lower fuel consumption in ECO mode. You can fit it yourself, in most cases in under 15 minutes.
How to find your Mini engine
Choose your model in the list above, then the generation by model year and chassis code, and the engine by the power output in your registration document. The engine page shows the exact gain and the tuning module price.
